Chairman
Message 2009 - 2010

As
incoming Chairman of the Southern Interior Construction
Association, I am very pleased to follow in the footsteps
of previous strong and accomplished Chairs. Their
leadership and dedication has left the Association
in a strong, vibrant, relevant, and financially stable
position – an enviable and easy path for an
incoming Chair to follow. Membership is involved,
programs are current and well utilized, and staff
is committed and accessible to the members. The Association
is recognized by the industry, politicians, and the
public as THE voice of Industrial/Commercial/Institutional
construction in the region. All industry participants
– Owners, Consultants, and Contractors –
look to the Association to provide leadership to the
industry, and SICA very successfully delivers.
That is not to say that we can rest on our laurels.
The world around us is changing, and SICA must continue
to be forward looking, and adapt to these changes.
Events half way around the world can impact us, and
our members. The electronic world is changing how,
and with whom, we do business. Some of the very fundamental
structures of our industry are being challenged –
bidding processes, contract language, payment terms,
moral and ethical issues, worker skill sets, and construction
methods – all are at risk of changing with the
times. With the recent corporate scandals, Boards
of Directors are required to be more involved, more
aware, more diligent, and are more responsible for
their actions and decisions.
But challenge and change are not new to SICA. SICA
and its members have successfully addressed each challenge
that has come along over the last forty years, adapted,
and grown stronger, because of them. A Board Governance
session is planned, to keep the Board current on their
duties and responsibilities. A facilitated Strategic
Planning Session will help the Board and Association
recognize, respond, and adapt to these changing times.
Members continue to give selflessly of their skills
and time to the industry. Our highly skilled Association
staff remains hard-working and dedicated, and seem
to adapt and thrive as our industry evolves with these
global changes.
These are truly interesting and challenging times,
and I look forward to working for, and with the membership
and industry partners during my term as Chair of the
Southern Interior Construction Association.
Sincerely,
Terry Brown
